Joan B. Fowler, PharmD, BCPP, CGP
Vice-President

Dr. Fowler received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree from Tennessee Technological University and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee. She has over ten years of experience in direct patient care in the VA (veterans health care) system. In the facility where she operated her geriatric and psychiatry clinics and oversaw inpatient units, she was the only clinical pharmacist working with over 30 physicians, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants. She developed an innovative system for education of practitioners on new medications, devices, and procedures in the geriatric and psychiatric population in order to efficiently improve patient care. In addition to coordinating and providing hundreds of educational programs to the medical staff, she was also involved in teaching Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within the medical center to all disciplines.

Dr. Fowler joined the faculty at the UK College of Pharmacy in 1990 and served as a clinical specialist in the Office of Continuing Education from 1997-2000. Her teaching responsibilities have included preceptorship of students on clinical rotations and coordination of the Geriatric Pharmacy course.

In recent years she has developed, coordinated, and moderated hundreds of live, national programs for pharmacists and physicians. As a speaker herself she has spoken to hundreds of groups on a local to international basis over her career.

Dr. Fowler is a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist, as well as a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist. She serves on the Core Curriculum Task Force for the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), the Recertification Committee for the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP), and has served in the House of Delegates and on the Professional Affairs Committee for the Kentucky Society of Health System Pharmacists. Additionally, she sits on the Board of Directors for the American Lung Association of Kentucky and Kentucky ACTION.
