Target Audience:

Pharmacists and other healthcare providers attending the 2009 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants will be able to:
  • Evaluate patterns and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and estimate the burden of gram-negative resistance in the United States.
  • Assess the impact of inappropriate initial antibiotic treatment on gram-negative bacterial resistance and associated morbidity and mortality.
  • Recommend appropriate treatment strategies for complicated infections including initiation of appropriate therapy and de-escalation.
  • Evaluate the utility of broad-spectrum agents, including carbapenems, for the treatment of complicated case scenarios.
  • Propose infection control strategies to prevent the spread of resistant pathogens in the hospital setting.
